About the data
Check My Tax Preparer is an independent site that makes the IRS's public list of paid tax preparers easy to search. It isn't run by or affiliated with the IRS or any preparer.
Where the records come from
The IRS Return Preparer Office publishes the list of Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) holders under the Freedom of Information Act. It includes each preparer's name, the business name and address they gave the IRS, phone, website, professional credentials, and whether they completed the IRS's Annual Filing Season Program. PTIN numbers themselves aren't public. We match each ZIP code to its county with the Census Bureau's ZIP-to-county file, so you can search by county.
The IRS updates its list a few times a year; we check for a new one every week. The date of the list is on every preparer's page.
What the records can't tell you
- A PTIN shows a preparer is registered, not that they're good at the job. Credentials show who passed exams or holds a license.
- The list doesn't include IRS or state discipline, and a credential may have lapsed since the list was published. Confirm with the licensing board.
- Addresses are business addresses the preparers gave the IRS; some are out of date.
- Nothing here is tax advice, and nothing here says a preparer is good or bad at their job.
Corrections
We show the IRS's records as published. Preparers can update their own details in their online PTIN account, and the change appears here after the IRS publishes its next list. For a problem with how this site shows a record, email admin@checkmytaxpreparer.com.
